The Lithuanian government has declared a state of emergency in response to numerous balloons carrying contraband that are being launched from Belarus. The balloons are disrupting air traffic and posing safety risks, according to a report by public broadcaster LRT.
Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratavičius was appointed to lead government operations under the emergency regime. The Interior Ministry emphasized that the measures will be narrowly targeted and “aimed solely at the organizers and perpetrators of illegal activity.” The emergency designation will also allow closer coordination among state agencies and, if necessary, the deployment of military units.
On Dec. 1, Vilnius Airport was paralyzed for 11 hours after Belarus deliberately launched 60 balloons into Lithuania’s airspace. They were sent up in intervals as part of an effort to keep them continuously drifting through the airport’s critical zones. More than 7,400 passengers and 50 flights were affected — 31 were canceled, 10 were diverted, and 9 were delayed.
