Russian forces carried out a strike on Kherson on the morning of Oct. 24, injuring more than 20 people and killing two, according to a report by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
A total of 21 people were wounded, including three children, the agency said. The regional military administration reported that apartment buildings and private homes were damaged in the attack.
The Korabelnyi District, located in the western part of the city, came under fire. The Telegram channel “From Mariupol to the Carpathians”, which is linked to Russian troops operating in the Kherson area, published footage of the strike. The channel claimed that the attack destroyed “UAV operator positions and active locations of airspace control systems.”
The same channel also alleged that an unspecified “critical infrastructure facility” was hit and destroyed. Russian military sources announced that additional strikes on the city would follow throughout the day.
Nevertheless, the attack on Kherson was met with mixed reactions within Russian pro-war online communities. The Telegram channel “Osvedomitel” (lit. “Informer”) criticized the choice of weaponry, saying that the use of multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) were “entirely inappropriate” for such targets:
“The main questions are what for and why. For any of these targets, MLRS are entirely inappropriate. The local population will be ‘delighted,’ of course, when a rocket lands wherever fate sends it. Overall, MLRS are an overrated type of weapon that, even in the current conflict, rarely fulfill the tasks assigned to them.”
Another pro-war outlet, “Voenny Osvedomitel” (“Military Informer”), also shared video of the strike and questioned its military utility, writing: “You can judge for yourself how effective this is.”
Kherson city officials said Russian UAVs also attacked the Dniprovskiy District in the eastern part of the city, where a Shahed-type drone struck a multi-story residential building, injuring three people.
